Summary: When Louisville looked at their tight end room the last couple seasons I think they saw some athletic players who could help them in the run game and occasionally make some offensive plays if put in the right position. Most seasons that’s fine, if you have weapons around them that can be used to fill in some gaps here and there, and usually Louisville did. But, I think there was some long discussions last year and into the offseason around building this room into something we haven’t seen on Floyd Street in decades. The Cards go and snag a new TE coach with experience who knows the Brohm offense (Paul Petrino), grab a TE1 in Foley, already had an upcoming stud on the roster in Mesman, had a high floor guy they were developing in Skinner, and now add a huge piece of the blocking game in Reid.

Justyn made it his absolute job last year to either protect his QB or create lanes for the RB, and when called upon, snag a few catches from the end of the line. Reid knows he was brought in to bolster the room, and his strength was in giving the playmakers time and space to make plays. With Paul Petrino in the mix now, there is no question that “toughness” will be valued in the room, and Reid brings the resume to get early playing time this year. I really liked the Q&A with these guys back in the Spring as they got into some behind the scenes stuff and how the room is starting to gel with all the various skillsets, and if you listen real closely you’ll even hear a mention of ‘13 personnel’ meaning the Cards would have so many tight ends on the field at the same time your computer would flag the highlight tape as ‘Not Safe For Work’. Enjoy the clip below, free of booty…and treasure, and all that type stuff.
