Police arrest passenger with 150 live scorpions at Cape Town airport

A 28-year-old man has been arrested after police discovered 150 live venomous scorpions concealed inside his luggage at Cape Town International Airport.
The arrest was made on Friday, 12 June, during an intelligence-driven operation conducted by members of the SAPS Kuilsriver Stock Theft and Endangered Species Unit in collaboration with CapeNature.

According to police, officers acted on information regarding an individual allegedly in possession of scorpions at the airport.
After obtaining a description of the suspect, authorities located and apprehended him before conducting a search of his luggage.
During the search, officers found 150 live scorpions hidden among the suspect’s clothing.
The man was immediately arrested and charged under the Nature and Environmental Conservation Ordinance Act for the unlawful possession of a wild animal.
Investigation Continues
Police have not yet determined the value of the seized scorpions, and investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding their possession and intended destination.
The scorpions were removed from the airport and transported to a place of safety, where they will be cared for while authorities continue their investigation.
The seizure highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat wildlife-related crimes and the illegal trade in protected and endangered species.
Court Appearance
The suspect is expected to make his first appearance in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 15 June.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the species of scorpions involved or whether additional arrests are expected.
The case remains under investigation.
