O-A possesses the tools required to win a high school state softball championship. Can the last remaining Rochester-area team bring home a NYSPHSAA title for Section V?
O-A (19-1) moved one step closer on Friday, June 12. Savannah Durham struck out 11 batters in a 9-0, Class D semifinal victory over Section III champion Cincinnatus (19-1). That earned the Hornets a Saturday, June 13 date with Windham-Ashland-Jewett (20-0) in the NYSPHSAA Class D final.
Hornets keep rolling
Durham allowed just three Cincinnatus base runners to reach scoring position in a four-hit shutout at Binghamton’s Greenlight Networks Grand Slam Park. She also delivered a two-run single in the second inning, plus an RBI double in the sixth.
O-A scored three runs in the second inning, the first on a bunt single from Rylee Denny while the bases were loaded. Two more scored when Durham hit a line drive to left field.
Raine Denny scored on a wild pitch after leading off the O-A fifth with a single. The Hornets then added two runs in a sixth inning highlighted by a Durham double, and three more in the seventh, including RBI hits from Emma Thompson and Ysabella Schrauger.
Raine Denny finished 3 for 3 with a walk while Durham went 2 for 3 with two walks and three RBIs.
Battle-tested
O-A reached Binghamton and the state semifinals after navigating a Section V field which included several Class D teams ranked among New York’s top 25.
Seeded second in Class D1, the Hornets posted lopsided victories over Arkport/Canaseraga and Keshequa before a 6-4 victory over defending champion Fillmore in the D1 final. They then defeated Class D2 champ Avoca/Prattsburgh, 13-1, before a NYSPHSAA regional victory over Section VI champion Forestville.
O-A defeated Forestville, 6-1, and became the only Section V softball team to reach the 2026 state semifinals. Its only loss this season occurred on May 8, a 2-0 setback to Lyndonville.
O-A and Windham-Ashland-Jewett are scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. first pitch on Saturday, June 13 at Grand Slam Park. W-A-J, the Section IV champ, defeated Fort Ann of Section II in the semifinals.
