The Detroit Lions don't need Jared Goff to be a player he has never been before.

They simply need him to return to a past version of himself.

Call it time travel, needing Goff to play like the 2024 edition and not the 2025 one.

That's the question asked by ESPN's Dan Graziano in a new article on Tuesday: "Will new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing get Jared Goff back to his 2024 level?"

In 2024, with Goff at the top of his game, the Lions went 15-2 in the regular season.

Then in 2025, with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson gone, it was a regression to a 9-8 season that didn't even squeak into the playoffs.

"Goff wasn't terrible, but he did post his lowest QBR since his first season in Detroit (before Johnson took over as coordinator), and the Lions finished 9-8 to miss the playoffs," Graziano writes. "There are more changes this season, as Petzing comes from Arizona to replace John Morton."

Graziano adds that Penei Sewell is likely moving from right tackle to left tackle.

"Goff is signed with the Lions through 2028, so his title window remains wide open," Graziano writes. "The Lions' schedule also projects as the sixth easiest in the league, based on the 2025 record of their opponents. If Goff takes to Petzing's offense and coach Dan Campbell doesn't have to take over offensive playcalling again, the Lions could find themselves back at their 2024 heights."

Goff still has ample weapons around him, led by the likes of Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Sam LaPorta.

He's a player who thrives in a good system with good players around him. That's what the Lions are hoping to have again this season, and if they can execute, it could be a great year of throwing it back in time in Detroit.
