University of Kentucky football player Nic Smith dies

The University of Kentucky is mourning the sudden loss of one of its Wildcats.

In a social media post on Monday, the UK Football program shared that sophomore Nic Smith had died. 

"We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved teammate," the program said. "We extend our thoughts and prayers to Nic’s family, friends and the members of our program."

Smith, who is from Loganville, Ga., was a defensive lineman for the Wildcats. He redshirted for the 2025 season.

He was a sophomore at the university, studying in the Community Leadership and Development program in the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

“Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him," UK Football Head Coach Will Stein said in a statement. "This is a tremendous loss for our program and university community. We will continue to support one another and honor his memory."

Details about Smith's death have not been released at this time.
