Even former great Charles Barkley thinks Towns can be the Knicks’ MVP in the Finals.

On Sunday, longtime NBA commentator Colin Cowherd had praise for Karl-Anthony Towns. He praised KAT’s Hall of Fame skill and the way he has changed since joining the New York club.

“Karl-Anthony Towns, if he wins MVP, will make the Hall of Fame and this is where KAT gets a lot of credit,” Cowherd said. “He was always known as kind of a flaky player with immense talent you couldn’t depend on. He’s literally been the opposite.

“He has literally been the sturdiest, most dependable, greatest teammate. And that’s not a criticism. His rep was dumb fouls, streaky scorer, kind of goofy — the opposite.”

Jason Timpf chimed in and said that KAT was “mistake-prone” early in his career, and there were questions about whether a team could win with him. Timpf also said that the Knicks star isn’t making as many mistakes as before.

Karl-Anthony Towns has been one of the most valuable players for the Knicks. Amid their run, however, there are upcoming concerns about Towns’ future with the team. He has one year left in his four-year, $220 million contract extension before he’s eligible to pick up his $61 million player option.

The Knicks have contract issues that need to be resolved following their series. Reaching the second round is not what the organization wants, but they also want to reward Towns for the work that he has done.

“The reality of today’s NBA means there are second-apron concerns for the Knicks to take into consideration,” Sam Amick of The Athletic wrote, “and a desire to be prudent enough with the payroll so as not to compromise roster depth. But the tone of those talks, given everything Towns has done here, should be far more flattering toward him this time around. He deserves immense credit for that much.”

If there’s one player who deserves to get paid by the Knicks, it’s Kar-Anthony Towns.
