Toronto pair face gun, drug charges; Richmond Hill man sought for auto sales scheme

Two people face gun and drug charges stemming from an investigation into a shooting in the city’s east end.

Toronto Police say officers responded to a call for sounds of gunshots in the area of Kingston Rd. and Malvern Ave. – east of Main St. – just after 3 a.m. on April 30.

It is alleged that a firearm was discharged. But there were no reported injuries or damage to property.

The investigation subsequently led to officers from 55 Division executing a search warrant on May 18, police said in a statement released Friday. And during that search they allegedly seized a loaded firearm, ammunition, illicit drugs – MDMA and Crystal Meth – and a quantity of cash.

Two suspects were arrested.

Joshua Hill, 36, of Toronto, is charged with 13 offences, including discharging of a prohibited firearm, possession of a weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon, and three counts of possession of a firearm while prohibited.

Christine Ferreira, 50, of Toronto, is charged with 10 offences, including possession of prohibited weapon, careless storage of a firearm, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, and two counts of possession of a schedule 1 substance for trafficking.

SPANISH-SPEAKING CANADIANS TARGETED IN AUTO SALES SCHEME

A Richmond Hill man is wanted for an auto sales scheme that allegedly targeted new Canadians.

York Regional Police say investigators believe the suspect posed as a licensed vehicle salesman who targeted Spanish-speaking new Canadians between January and May.

The suspect met the victims and showed them vehicles that were in the possession of legitimate dealerships or advertised online, police alleged in a statement released Friday. The man then allegedly obtained the victims financial information and accepted cash down payments before ceasing communication.

Investigators believe the man used industry contacts to help facilitate the alleged frauds, including borrowing office space to meet with victims.

Police have so far been unable to locate the suspect but a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Duglas Rodriquez, 49, is wanted for fraud under $5,000, false pretense, theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime.

Police warned that anyone who assists Rodriquez may be subject to criminal charges.

MAN ACCUSED OF SEXUALLY ASSAULTING TEEN GIRL IN GEORGETOWN

A 28-year-old man is accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl in Georgetown earlier this week.

Halton Regional Police say a teenage girl was walking in the area of James and Draper Sts. when she was approached by a man just after 7 p.m. on Monday.

The man allegedly began a conversation with the teen and then sexually assaulted her.

Investigators subsequently identified a Georgetown resident as a suspect and arrested him on Friday.

Sankalp Singh is charged him with sexual assault, invitation to sexual touching and sexual interference.

The victim did not suffer any physical injuries.

Police are concerned about the possibility of other alleged victims.

Singh is currently being held in custody awaiting a bail hearing in a Milton court.

BURIAL MONUMENT STOLEN FROM BURLINGTON CEMETERY

Investigators need help tracking down a burial monument that was stolen from a Burlington cemetery this month.

Halton Regional Police say the monument was reported stolen from the Lowville United Church Cemetery on Monday, but it’s believed the theft occurred sometime between May 16 and May 22.

The monument is a four-and-a-half-foot tall angel made of cast resin and weighs approximately 100 pounds.

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATING AFTER BODY PULLED FROM HAMILTON HARBOUR

Homicide detectives have been called in to investigate after a dead body was found in the harbour in Hamilton on Friday.

Hamilton Police say they were informed about a body in the water near Wilcox St. N. around 8 a.m.

The police say the circumstances surrounding the discovery are deemed suspicious.

The Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation.
