Hainje sets records, Lawrence North wins team title at track and field regional

GREENFIELD – Rylan Hainje was not having a great day on Thursday.
“I didn’t have a good breakfast and barely ate lunch,” the Franklin Central track star said. “I came here thinking, ‘Let me get this over with.’”

“This” meaning the high school track and field regional at Greenfield-Central. And Hainje did get it over with rather quickly. In fact, in his signature event, he finished more quickly than all but one high school athlete in history.
Hainje ran the 110-meter hurdles in 13.05 seconds, which betters the national record of 13.08 seconds set by Wayne Davis of Southeast Raleigh (N.C.) in 2009. The only faster time by a high school athlete was a wind-aided 12.97 by Andrew Jones of Spring, Texas, on April 3. There was not a wind gauge at Thursday’s meet, however, and the mark will likely not be recognized as a national record by Track & Field News and other national statisticians.
On a relatively windless night, Hainje’s time – which came in the preliminaries – should at least stand as the state record. He set the state record last year with a 13.28 at the state meet, but continues to push the boundaries of what seems possible.
“Ever since last year, I felt like it was possible,” Hainje said.
Hainje was also part of Franklin Central’s 4x400 relay team breaking the state record previously held by Gary West Side in 1980. Franklin Central’s 3:13.54 broke the 46-year-old record by .12 seconds. Franklin Central’s team of Hainje, Kervenson Clerger, Braden Carman and Hudson Moritz had to hold off Bishop Chatard, which posted a 3:15.09 in the final event of the night.
Franklin Central did come up just a bit short in the team results. Lawrence North finished with 82 points to runner-up Franklin Central’s 74. Greenfield-Central was third with 67.5 points.
Lawrence North’s ability to put together enough points here and there was exemplified by senior Breck Mallory, who was second in the long jump (22-6), second in the discus (164-4), sixth in the shot put (48-1.25) and sixth in the 300 hurdles (41.19). That effort by Mallory resulted in 22 points.
“I just like to compete and work hard and win,” said Mallory, a Western Michigan football recruit. “It’s not like I don’t care about track, but it’s not really my main sport. My mind is mainly on football. But when I come out here, I want to win. That’s all I’m trying to do.”
Lawrence North’s football and track and field teams have a uniquely close relationship in large part due to Mallory’s father, Pat Mallory, coaching both teams. Lawrence North won the boys’ track state championship last year.
“We’re working year-round and not sitting around,” Breck Mallory said of the football and track combination. “I feel like LN is the only school that makes their kids do track, pretty much, and just keep working so we can better in football. But running and staying in shape and being ready to go into football season is big. Other people are probably sitting at home and lounging around.”

>>>Hainje also won the 300 hurdles with a time of 38.06 to hold off East Central’s Trevor Perkins (39.26) and Everett Bishop of Greenfield-Central (39.27). Hainje helped the Flashes to the 4x100 relay title with a time of 41.37 seconds. Hainje, Dylan Keck, Moritz and Jett Snell are the Flashes’ foursome. Cathedral took second and set a school record at 41.57.
