If you think you saw a meteor fly through the sky in the GTA on Wednesday morning, you’re not alone.
Some people reported seeing a glowing meteor in the early morning hours.
An X user posted a 16-second dashcam video . About six seconds in, a light streak can be seen travelling downward in the dark blue sky.
“Was this a fireball? A meteor?” the user, @bee_fowlow, wrote.
Residents also called in to 680 NewsRadio to report meteor sightings of their own. One listener said he was driving southbound on Highway 404 in Georgina around 5:15 a.m. when he saw the flash of light in the sky, per CityNews .
Other 680 NewsRadio listeners said they saw flashes of light while trekking down Highway 427 near Burnhamthorpe Rd. and on Highway 400 near Highway 89.
Two dozen ‘fireball reports’
According to the American Meteor Society , a non-profit organization that researches meteor activity, there were more than 20 pending “fireball reports” in southern Ontario, with sightings in Toronto, Mississauga, Aurora, Innisfil and Whitchurch-Stouffville.
NASA reports the next expected meteor shower is the Perseids , one of the most prolific meteor displays of the year that can produce up to 100 meteors an hour. It is expected to peak in August. Meteors are made up of leftover particles from comets and asteroids, the organization states.
“When comets come around the Sun, they leave a dusty trail behind them,” the NASA website noted. “Every year Earth passes through these debris trails, which allows the bits to collide with our atmosphere and disintegrate to create fiery and colourful streaks in the sky.”
