In a statement, the team said that Messi suffered "an overload associated with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring."
They did not say how long, if at all, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner will be out, but offered, "The timeline for his return to physical activity will depend on his clinical and functional progress."
Messi asked for a substitution in the 73rd minute of Inter Miami's rainy match against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday, May 24. He appeared to grab his leg shortly before making the request.
"He’s tired," Inter Miami manager Guillermo Hoyos told the media after the 6-4 win. "Fatigue. He was tired. The field was heavy, right? When faced with doubt, you always try not to take risks."
The win was the last match before the break for the 2026 World Cup. While Argentina's roster hasn't officially been finalized, Messi is expected to play in his sixth World Cup this summer. The tournament kicks off in June across the United States, Mexico and Canada. Messi won his first World Cup in 2022, capping off a career that puts him in the conversation as one of the greatest of all time.
