The USMNT has used Diego Luna in a bunch of marketing materials ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.
Luna won't actually be playing, though. He hasn't made the United States roster.
The squad won't be announced until May 26, but leaks have begun to reveal who is taking part and who isn't.
The Athletic, though, reported that Luna will be missing the team.
One key swing decision is that the U.S. is bringing Gio Reyna instead of Luna.
Luna played in 17 of the 18 Team USA games in 2025, and he made a big impact, but apparently that wasn't enough.
Why didn't Diego Luna make the USMNT?
It appears Mauricio Pochettino has valued European and high-level experience over current form or availability.
Luna still plays in MLS, and that appears to have lost him at least a bit of respect.
The ball knowledge of the casual USMNT fan is concerning.

People are genuinely shocked that Diego Luna won’t be at the World Cup.
Nasty work by USSF to push Luna propaganda so hard knowing there’s a good chance he wouldn’t make the final roster. Brutal. 🥀
Reyna clearly didn't earn his spot on form over Luna. He simply earned it based on pedigree and reputation.
It's hard to make the full case for Luna missing. He's been trustworthy, and at times a standout.
But something about Luna's resume seems to have kept him off the team, a big bummer for him, and for a lot of USMNT fans who have come to love Luna's game.
