Mets rookie outfielder Nick Morabito debuted in the majors on Wednesday night as a pinch hitter for the visiting team. The Nationals beat New York 8-4, giving them a 2-1 series lead at home, although Morabito had only one plate appearance. He was called up from the minors after the Mets designated Austin Slater for assignment.

Although it was a joyful day for the 23-year-old American making his big league debut, an MLB insider with WFAN Sports Radio criticized the organization for temporarily giving Morabito the No. 8 jersey. This jersey has been kept as an unofficial tribute to the late Mets legend, Gary Carter, and has not been officially retired.

“The New York Mets were sullying the legacy of the great Gary Carter. Unbelievable that the ballclub would give more veto of the late Gary Carter’s number, quote unquote, by mistake. This might be the dumbest organization in New York history, worse than the Wilpon Mets. And I’m sorry, not sorry. If you don’t give out Gary Carter’s number for 25 years, there’s a reason,” the Insider said.

“Now one might say, if you’re not going to give it out, retire it, right? One might say that. But the flip side of that is who is the dumb a** that gave more veto Gary Carter’s number eight for one game? I just don’t get it. I don’t get it either. The NYM at times are the most dysfunctional and dumb a** organization in the history of New York sports. And that’s saying something,” he added.

Mets Rookie Nick Morabito Felt Nostalgic Making His Debut in Washington

Morabito attended Gonzaga College High School in downtown Washington, where he developed into a serious Draft prospect, catching the Mets’ and other teams’ eyes. Reflecting on his major-league debut from Wednesday night, the rookie felt nostalgic and pleased to be back in Washington, D.C.

“That was pretty cool. It brings back a lot of memories. I grew up coming to this park, so it’s a pretty surreal moment for me. Just to be here, it’s very special,” Morabito said.

Summing up his inaugural night in the big leagues, Morabito said, “Obviously would have loved to get the win. But to get out there, get my feet wet, first game, it was pretty surreal just to be in that environment,” the rookie said.

The Mets will aim to win Thursday’s series finale against the Nats to avoid a loss in the intra-divisional series before they head to Miami to take on the Marlins over the weekend.
