Cole’s return comes at a critical point in the season for New York. The Yankees have hit a rough stretch lately, and things became even more concerning when ace Max Fried was recently placed on the injured list. For much of the season, Fried had been the stabilizing force in New York’s rotation. Losing him suddenly created questions about who would step up and carry the staff. Now the Yankees are getting back someone who has spent years doing exactly that.
The road to this point has not been short. Tommy John surgery forced Cole to miss the entire 2025 season and the beginning of the 2026 campaign. For a pitcher entering his mid-30s, there were naturally questions surrounding how he would look upon returning. Can he still dominate? Can he handle a full workload? Can he still pitch like an ace? Those questions will start getting answered on Friday night.
The Return Comes Against the Rays
If the timing was not already interesting enough, Cole’s first start back also happens to come against the American League East-leading Tampa Bay Rays. That matchup carries some added motivation.
Earlier this season, Tampa Bay swept the Yankees in a series down in Florida, helping establish itself as one of the top teams in the division. Now, New York gets an opportunity to change the narrative. And they’ll be doing it with their former Cy Young winner back on the mound.

The Yankees still own one of baseball’s best records, but momentum can shift quickly over a long season. Cole’s return is not just about adding another arm to the rotation. It is about adding leadership, experience, and a pitcher capable of changing the feel of a series every time he takes the ball.
Because even if Cole isn’t immediately the same pitcher he was before surgery, his presence alone changes expectations. The Yankees needed some good news. They got it. Gerrit Cole is officially back, and his return comes at a moment when New York desperately needs stability. And now, against the division-leading Rays, the Yankees will see if their former ace can immediately help flip the script.
