Trevor McDonald and Casey Schmitt earned kudos after helping the San Francisco Giants snap a three-game losing streak in beating the Athletics 6-4 on Saturday night at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, Calif.

Schmitt hit a solo home run in the first inning, then came back with a two-run homer in the fifth as he helped stamp the Giants to a 5-0 lead at that point.

McDonald goes to 2-0 this season after throwing 6 2/3 innings of six-hit ball. McDonald gave up one earned run, walked one, and struck out five as he now has a 2.37 ERA. Athletics starter Luis Severino absorbed the loss, falling to 2-5. In six innings of work, Severino gave up 10 hits, five earned runs, walked two, and struck out seven.

Severino, though, gave up Schmitt's two home runs.

With the victory, the Giants are now 19-27 overall and sit in fourth place in the National League West Division. The Athletics fall to 23-22 this season and are in first place in the always-tough American League West Division.

In the top of the third inning, San Francisco's Willy Adames singled to right field. Jung Hoo Lee and Luis Arraez scored, but Adames was out at second as he tried to stretch a single into a double. Athletics right fielder Lawrence Butler threw home, and catcher Shea Langeliers then fired to shortstop Darell Hernaiz, who put the tag on Adames.

After all that took place, the Giants were up 3-0.

Schmitt's second home run also brought home Arraez and San Francisco then was up 5-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Jeff McNeil grounded into a forceout but Butler scored to put the Athletics on the board at 5-1.

Matt Chapman's ninth double this season allowed Rafael Devers to score and Adames to advance to third base. That put the Giants up 6-1 and it looked like the game was over at that point.

But the Athletics are tough this season, a team that has shown a lot of fight.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Brent Rooker hit his sixth home run this season, a three-run blast that brought home Nick Kurtz and Langeliers. The Athletics got within 6-4, but that's how the game ended on a Saturday night in Northern California.

Giants reliever Erik Miller worked two-thirds of an inning and didn't give up a hit. But he did give up two earned runs, walked two batters, and struck out one. Caleb Killian came on and worked two-thirds of an inning, giving up one hit, one earned run, didn't walk a batter, and struck out two. Killian, though, gave up Rooker's homer.

Matt Gage then came on and worked a clean ninth inning, picking up his first save this season.

When Giants fans look at the box score from Saturday night's game, they're going to be unnerved by the team going 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position. San Francisco left 11 runners on base, which means they had a lot of chances to score more runs.

How about with two outs and runners in scoring position? Well, Harrison Bader had three of those opportunities, Jesus Rodriguez had two, and Schmitt had one.

The Athletics were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left five runners on base.

The Giants and Athletics go at it one more time on Sunday afternoon.
