Estacado delivered.
The Matadors boasted two sprinters who left Mike A. Myers Stadium with shiny tokens Thursday. They were the only competitors from the South Plains to finish in the top three.
Ivyrson McGuire ran the 200 meters in 21.29 seconds to earn silver in the Class 4A boys event. He entered the meet as the fifth seed.
"I worked all day, every day," McGuire said, "staying after practice, putting in extra work. Asking coach what I need to work on, listening, paying attention. All that's paying off right now."
Adalia McNeal started off the festivities with a bronze in the 100. The Estacado senior edged Manor New Tech's Maliya Curry by .007 seconds to run an 11.69. That led to an anxious time as McNeal waited for the results to come across the videoboard.
"I really got kind of emotional because it's my last year," McNeal said. "I really wanted to see my name on the big screen, and once it popped up, I broke down a little bit, I can't lie."
It was especially satisfying after a nagging injury flared up at last year's regional meet, hindering her performance. McNeal made state for the first time and made the most of it.
"I've just really been taking this season one race at a time," McNeal said. "I'm just really grateful to be here right now."
Both McNeal and McGuire shared the sentiment they were proud to do it all for the Eastside of Lubbock.
"It's an honor," McGuire said. "Everybody's gonna talk bad about the 'E.' They can, but at the end of the day, we're gonna represent."
