But despite the uncertainty over Howe’s position, the club could be set for a major squad overhaul for next season.
According to The i Paper, they are looking to sign a new goalkeeper and have James Trafford, Robin Risser and Bart Verbruggen on their shortlist.
Newcastle retain an interest in Trafford, who rejected them to join Manchester City last summer.
The 23-year-old is keen to find regular first-team minutes, as Gianluigi Donnarumma is Pep Guardiola’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Risser plays for Ligue 1 outfit Lens, and he has had an impressive 2025-26 campaign.
The young keeper has started 30 league matches this season, with 10 clean sheets to his name.
Verbruggen has established himself as one of the best in his position since joining Brighton & Hove Albion in 2023.
The Duchtman’s performances in the Premier League have also sparked an interest from Tottenham Hotspur, who could make a summer move if they survive the relegation battle.
Signing a new goalkeeper is a priority for Newcastle, with Aaron Ramsdale set to return to Southampton when his loan deal expires.
Newcastle also have Nick Pope but the 34-year-old has had an error-strewn campaign and isn’t reliable anymore.
