Former QB Ron Powlus takes big role in Notre Dame reorganization
· Yahoo Sports
In a rapidly changing environment for collegiate sports, Notre Dame is looking to stay ahead of the curve.
Notre Dame Vice President and James E. Rohr Director of Athletics Pete Bevacqua announced a sweeping reorganization of the athletics department’s senior leadership structure, clearly attempting to be proactive in the rapidly evolving landscape of college athletics.

The most notable change is the appointment of former Notre Dame quarterback Ron Powlus as the department’s first-ever chief operating officer. Powlus, a 1997 graduate who has served in multiple roles within the football program and athletic administration, will retain oversight of football operations and the university’s name, image and likeness (NIL) efforts. His expanded responsibilities now include sports performance, internal operations, equipment and facilities.
Bevacqua said the restructuring is designed to position Notre Dame for sustained success amid ongoing changes across intercollegiate athletics. He pointed to Powlus’ leadership within the football program as a key factor in elevating him to the newly created role.
In addition to Powlus’ promotion, Garrett Chapman has been named deputy athletics director with oversight of the department’s financial division. Chapman will serve as the chief financial strategist, responsible for aligning fiscal planning with university priorities while helping Notre Dame remain competitive in an increasingly complex financial environment. He joins the athletics executive leadership team alongside fellow deputy directors Jenny Borg, Aaron Horvath and Jody Sadler.
Katie Capps will also take on an expanded role, becoming senior associate athletics director and senior woman administrator following the retirement of longtime administrator Missy Conboy in June. Capps will oversee centralized services, facilities and equipment, and becomes just the second individual in Notre Dame history to hold the senior woman administrator designation.
The leadership changes represent Bevacqua’s first major restructuring since taking over the department, and signals an effort to modernize operations while preserving Notre Dame’s approach to athletics.
