The Houston Astros’ championship window is starting to close, as they come off a season where they missed the playoffs, and now are 6-9 and fourth place in the AL West. However, there could be a move that opens that window right back up.
FanSided’s Christopher Kline proposes that the Astros make a deal with the Miami Marlins, and land their Cy Young Sandy Alcantara. Alcantara is having a bounce-back season so far, so combining him with Hunter Brown and Tatsuya Imai would work wonders.
The trade would look like this:
Astros get: RHP Sandy Alcantara
Marlins get: HOU No. 4 prospect 2B Brice Matthews, HOU No. 10 prospect OF Zach Cole, HOU No. 12 prospect Miguel Ullola
“In the short term, Alcántara gives Houston stability atop the rotation. His lost 2024 campaign notwithstanding, Alcántara is a paragon of durability…Longer term, looking ahead to the postseason, Alcántara might be the second ace this Astros rotation needs. It's hard for the Astros to trust anybody not named Hunter Brown right now — and he's hurt. If Houston can pummel opponents with Brown and Alcántara come October, hopefully with both at peak condition, Houston's explosive offense can carry them a long way. All the Astros really need at that point is for at least one of Burrows, Imai or Javier to figure it out,” Kline wrote.
So far this season, Alcantara has posted a 2-0 record, a 0.74 ERA, 18 Ks, and a WHIP of 0.575 in 24 innings pitched. He’s set to make $17.3 million this season, and if Houston likes what they get, they can exercise his $21 million club option for next season.
In a weakened division, this is the best move the Astros can make. Having a Cy Young, a Cy Young candidate, and a possible All-Star at the top of their rotation is just what they need to conquer once again.
