Arsenal boss Arteta gives worrying update on Gabriel injury

Mikel Arteta has said it does not look like ‘good news’ after Arsenal defender Gabriel sustained an injury in the club’s FA Cup defeat at Southampton.

Arsenal exited the FA Cup after an upset defeat at Southampton, as goals from Ross Stewart and Shea Charles earned the Championship club a place in the semi-finals.

A disappointing night for Arsenal was compounded when Gabriel requested to be substituted in the second half. The Brazil defender was replaced by William Saliba for the final 18 minutes after appearing in discomfort.

Gabriel is now a major doubt for Arsenal’s Champions League quarter-final tie at Sporting CP on Tuesday night.

The North Londoners head to Lisbon to take on Sporting, aiming to recover from damaging defeats in the Carabao Cup final and FA Cup that have derailed their quadruple chase.

“I think he felt something. I don’t know exactly what it is,” Arteta said in his post-match press conference.

“We’re going to have to assess him, but obviously, when a player is asking to be substituted, it’s never good news.”
