The New York Mets started the 2025 season strong, but it ended in disaster. The team went from being the best in baseball to missing the playoffs entirely.
“The New York Mets, losers of six straight, are down 6-0 and facing Jacob deGrom. Since starting 45-24 and owning the best record in MLB, the Mets are 31-47, better than only the Rockies, Twins and Nationals. This isn't a collapse. It's a disintegration,” ESPN’s Jeff Passan posted.
Heading into the 2026 season, the Mets knew they needed pitching to compete. Last year, the rotation was their Achilles’ heel. To address that, New York traded for Milwaukee Brewers ace Freddy Peralta.
“The New York Mets' winterlong pursuit of a front-line starting pitcher ended late Wednesday when they acquired All-Star Freddy Peralta, as well as fellow right-hander Tobias Myers, from the Milwaukee Brewers for Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams, two of their top prospects,” ESPN’s Jorge Castillo wrote.
The Mets have gotten off to an okay start, sitting at 4-4, but there’s still room for improvement. On Saturday morning, the team signed former Atlanta Braves reliever Luke Jackson to a minor league contract.
“The Mets and veteran reliever Luke Jackson are in agreement on a minors deal, league sources tell The Athletic,” The Athletic’s Will Sammon wrote.
Jackson was a reliable piece during the Braves’ 2021 World Series run. New York is adding a proven arm that could help if everything clicks. With Edwin Diaz gone to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Mets are looking to bolster their bullpen. Jackson has earned $22 million over his career and will have a chance to show he still has it with the Mets.
