Palghar: A comprehensive survey conducted by the Zilla Parishad through anganwadi workers has identified 64,779 single women in the rural parts of Palghar district, underlining the urgent need for targeted welfare and empowerment measures. The survey reveals that the majority, 54,250 are widows, while 1,311 are divorced, 1,873 are deserted, and 7,345 are elderly unmarried women. Officials noted that once urban areas are surveyed, the total number of single women in the district could exceed two lakh.
The taluka-wise distribution reflects a significant spread across the district, with Dahanu reporting 10,093 single women, Palghar 11,382, Manor 7,743, Talasari 6,723, Kasa 6,567, Vikramgad 6,269, Mokhada 3,976, Vasai 2,945,

In a decisive step towards addressing the challenges faced by this group, Chief Executive Officer Manoj Ranade convened a meeting of all departments and assigned specific targets focused on the empowerment of single women. The meeting was attended by state coordinator of Sau Ekla Mahila Samiti Heramb Kulkarni, Women and Child Welfare Programme Officer Vyankatrao Hundekar, District Women and Child Welfare Officer Chaudhari, representatives from Umed and MAVIM, taluka-level Women and Child Welfare Officers, as well as journalist and social activist Ramakant Patil and Sujata Ayarkar. Hundekar presented the survey findings during the session.
Ranade directed officials to carry out an age-wise analysis of the data and assess, at the taluka level, which schemes are currently reaching these women and where gaps remain. He also instructed that every gram panchayat prepare a detailed digital record of single women in Google Sheets, including documentation status to ensure better access to government schemes. A major concern highlighted during the meeting was that while there are nearly 10,000 children below the age of 18 belonging to single women in the district, only about 1,500 currently benefit from the child support scheme. Authorities have now decided to fill application forms for all eligible children through schools and implement the scheme in mission mode, ensuring that each child receives ₹2,250 per month until the age of 18.
The administration also resolved to bring all single women who are currently outside self-help groups into such collectives using the survey database, and to organise employment workshops in every taluka. Umed and MAVIM have been tasked with expanding livelihood opportunities, while the Agriculture Department has been directed to prioritise single women under its schemes to promote income generation.

During the meeting, Kulkarni suggested that the district should use planning and development funds to pay interest on loans taken by single women for livelihood purposes, and proposed a ₹1 lakh fixed deposit for the education of children of women who remarry. He also recommended organising cancer screening health camps for single women and holding monthly review meetings at the taluka level under the supervision of tehsildars.
Ranade assured that multiple schemes will be implemented for the welfare of single women and that their progress will be regularly reviewed to ensure effective execution and meaningful empowerment.
The findings have brought renewed attention to the need for structured policy intervention and grassroots implementation to ensure social and economic empowerment of single women across the district.
