Woolworths has pranked customers with another April Fool’s Day joke about the addition of a new product. But instead of being disgusted or amused, shoppers are begging the retailer to roll out the item, en masse!
In late 2024, Woolies surprised the public by introducing a Chuckles beauty and body range, after joking about it on 1 April, just months earlier.

WOOLWORTHS’ APRIL FOOL’S JOKE, SHOPPERS REACT!
As they do each year, Woolworths posted an April Fool’s Day joke about the introduction of an imaginary product.
This year, it was their black shopper bag, made famous by the testimony of fraud-accused businessman Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala at the Madlanga Commission.
Woolies teased the release of a genuine leather bag, which surprisingly received the public’s thumbs-up.
“This is a shopper you won’t forget at home”, the retailer captioned the post.

Under the post, consumers were impressed by what they saw. Here’s what a few commented…
Cathryn Reece: “Joke’s on you. People would buy this”
John Julyan: “Another April Fools’ idea that you really should make, like the Chuckles body cream”
Lucy Slabbert Pretorius: “Not a bad idea though. One can place the Woolworths R500 Easter egg in that bag”.

CAT OUT THE BAG?
Late last year, Vusi “Cat” Matlala testified that former Minister of Police Bheki Cele allegedly demanded a R1 million bribe in exchange for his assistance in a criminal activity.
The trendy-looking “tenderpreuneur” paid half the money, in two instalments of R200 000 and R300 000, which he placed in a Woolworths shopping bag.
Woolies later made light of the mention with a cheeky X post.
The retailer tweeted: “Secures the groceries. A makeshift overnight bag. The national carrier. The multi-talented. Ladies and gentlemen… The right way to use the W bag”.
A few weeks later, Woolworths rolled out white, transparent bags, but insiders claim the timing was merely a coincidence.
According to podcaster Dan Corder, anonymous sources within the company confirmed that there was a shortage of the black bags and that the alternative, transparent ones, were ordered weeks ago.
“Woolies just got lucky”, the source said.
