· The South African

Football fans heading to the Bafana Bafana return clash against Panama in Cape Town on Tuesday are being encouraged to ditch the car and take the train.

The call follows confirmation from Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) that it will boost services and security for the international friendly between Bafana Bafana and Panama on 31 March.

PRASA will run trains on all lines into the city, helping to move thousands of supporters to the match at the Cape Town Stadium. Return tickets cost R20, with late-night return departures starting from 22:00.

This comes after an announcement by the City of Cape Town about FREE transport options for ticket holders.

“I am encouraged by PRASA’s continued progress in restoring passenger rail services across the province,” said Western Cape Mobility Minister, Isaac Sileku.

“All lines in the Cape Town metro are now back in operation, including key routes connecting Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain.”

Park and ride options along key lines

Supporters travelling by train can use several secure park and ride facilities along the metro rail network before heading into Cape Town.

On the Southern Line (Cape Town–Fish Hoek), parking is available at:

  • Kenilworth – public parking opposite the station
  • Heathfield – PRASA secure parking
  • Lakeside – PRASA secure parking
  • False Bay – PRASA secure parking
  • Fish Hoek – public parking opposite the station and beach parking

Along the Northern Line, commuters can park at stations including:

  • Strand
  • Eerste River
  • Kuils River
  • Brackenfell
  • Kraaifontein
  • Bellville
  • Tygerberg
  • Vasco

These sites are monitored 24 hours a day to help improve safety and ultimately reduce congestion near the stadium precinct.

Extra trains and security for matchday commuters

PRASA Western Cape Protection Services will work alongside law enforcement to boost security at stations and parking areas.

Fans are encouraged to arrive early to secure parking and allow enough time before kick-off. Extra trains will also run after the match to help supporters get home safely.

“Our vision for the Western Cape is an affordable, safe, and well-connected transport system, where trains are the first choice, not the last,” Sileku added.

South Africa take on fellow FIFA World Cup 2026 contenders Panama at the Cape Town Stadium in a second friendly, after drawing 1-1 in Durban on Friday.

Kick-off in Cape Town is at 19:30, with around 55 000 fans expected.
