Two ways for Commanders to fill biggest remaining need

General manager Adam Peters has made strides with the Washington Commanders' roster this offseason. Armed with around $90 million in cap space when free agency began, Peters targeted "younger and faster" players across the roster, specifically on defense. Peters even signed an athletic tight end to give Jayden Daniels some help.

Peters hasn't been able to fill all of the gaps on the Commanders' roster, though. There is a glaring need that must be addressed in the draft: Wide receiver. A recent CBS Sports article suggests two possible fixes for the Commanders, one free agent and one draft prospect.

Free agent fit: Brandon AiyukDraft fit: Carnell Tate, Ohio State

The Commanders were in on both Alec Pierce and Romeo Doubs but ended up with neither. They mostly focused on the defensive side in free agency. The offensive free agents they added -- Dyami Brown and Van Jefferson -- arrived on cheap, one-year deals. Once the 49ers release him, Aiyuk is expected to be the next addition, but Washington could (and should) still do more.

This isn't the first time these names have come up regarding the Commanders, and one thing people have to remember is that Brandon Aiyuk isn't a free agent — yet. He's still under contract with the San Francisco 49ers. There are complicated issues at play there, but the team hasn't released him. It's extremely unlikely that San Francisco finds a trade partner, as Aiyuk essentially holds all the cards. He can refuse to cooperate with his contract if the 49ers find a trade partner.

Carnell Tate is also an excellent candidate to fill this role. Not only does he have big game experience at a big-name school, but he could also come in cheap on a rookie contract. There's also not the same level of concern that there is with Aiyuk, who is also coming off a major injury. Washington needs a receiver who is capable of starting and playing the role, but they also need a player who can draw attention away from Terry McLaurin.

There's a world where Washington lands both, especially considering McLaurin's high 2027 cap number could allow the Commanders to move on from him. Aiyuk could sign a one-year, prove-it deal, reuniting him with Daniels, while Tate plays on a rookie contract.

The Commanders' delegation at Ohio State's pro day stuck around and talked to Tate after the events were over. While they talked with others, too, it's clear that Washington likes Tate.
