The two giants were initially set to face off on Saturday, 25 April at the iconic FNB Stadium. However, the fixture will now take place a day later, on Sunday, 26 April.
The change comes as a result of the Ultra Music Festival, which will be held at the nearby Nasrec Expo Centre, located within close proximity to the stadium precinct.
With both events expected to attract massive crowds, authorities opted to move the derby to ensure smoother logistical planning. This includes improved traffic flow, enhanced security measures, and a better overall experience for fans attending both events.
The two sides last met in February in the first Soweto Derby of the season, where Pirates delivered a dominant 3-0 victory over Chiefs at FNB Stadium. Goals from Tshepang Moremi, Oswin Appollis, and Evidence Makgopa secured a convincing win for the Buccaneers.
With just under a month to go until the next clash, there is still plenty at stake for both teams. Pirates are chasing their first league title in over a decade, while Chiefs are aiming to secure a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership after another trophyless campaign.
Soweto Derby on Sunday
Soweto Derbies are rarely played on a Sunday, making this upcoming encounter a notable exception.
Regardless of the day, fans can expect another mouthwatering showdown, as pride and bragging rights are always on the line when these two rivals meet.
Pirates have dominated the fixture, winning five consecutive league derbies. Chiefs, on the other hand, have beaten the Buccaneers in their recent cup meeting, which was the Nedbank Cup final.
The tickets for next month’s Soweto Derby will be made available in the coming weeks.
