For decades, Duke’s Bobby Hurley has stood alone at the summit of college basketball’s record books, his 1,076 career assists serving as the gold standard for elite playmaking. Since 1993, that mark has remained untouched — a testament to Hurley’s legendary vision and his role as the floor general for the Blue Devils’ back-to-back national title runs. Now, after 33 years, that historic milestone is on the verge of being eclipsed by the defining point guard of the modern era.

Purdue’s Braden Smith enters the 2026 NCAA Tournament just two assists shy of surpassing Hurley to become the all-time career leader. A consensus First-Team All-American and the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year, Smith has put together a statistical resume that borders on the impossible: he is the only player in NCAA history to reach 1,500 points, 1,000 assists, and 500 rebounds. While Hurley’s record was built on the foundation of a Duke dynasty, Smith has authored a similar legacy of longevity in West Lafayette, anchoring the winningest four-year stretch in program history and leading the Boilermakers to multiple conference titles.

Smith has methodically chipped away at it over 145 consecutive starts for Matt Painter, and whether the record falls in the opening round or deeper into the bracket, Smith’s ascent marks the crowning achievement of a career defined by loyalty and historic production.

Who has the most assists in NCAA history?

Bobby Hurley currently holds the record for the most assists in NCAA history, recording 1,076 assists during his legendary career at Duke from 1989 to 1993.

While Smith is currently chasing the history books, Hurley’s legacy as arguably the greatest pure point guard in college basketball remains firmly intact. A native of Jersey City who played for his father at the legendary St. Anthony High School, Hurley arrived at Duke in 1989 and immediately became the engine of the Blue Devils' most iconic era.

He led Duke to titles in 1991 and 1992, famously upsetting the undefeated UNLV Runnin' Rebels in the ’91 Final Four. Hurley also holds the all-time records for most tournament assists (145) and made three-pointers (42). He was named the 1992 Final Four Most Outstanding Player, cementing his status as a big-game performer.

His NBA career was tragically altered by a devastating car accident during his rookie season with the Sacramento Kings in 1993. After a long recovery, he was never able to return to his collegiate form. Hurley transitioned into coaching, most recently spending 11 seasons as the head coach at Arizona State, where he became the second-winningest coach in program history before his tenure ended in March 2026.

Bobby Hurley

Hurley was the centerpiece to Duke's emergence as a college basketball powerhouses. In the early 1990s, he propelled the Blue Devils to two straight championships, including over a UNLV team that entered the 1991 Final Four as the undefeated, defending national champions.

The Runnin' Rebels arrived in Indianapolis with a 34-0 record and a 45-game winning streak, having embarrassed Duke by 30 points in the title game just one year earlier. However, Hurley’s poise and a clutch late-game three-pointer helped dismantle the "invincible" Rebels, paving the way for Mike Krzyzewski's first national title. Hurley would go on to earn Final Four Most Outstanding Player honors in 1992, solidifying a legacy that eventually saw his No. 11 jersey retired to the rafters of Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Smith is the engine behind the winningest era in Purdue basketball history. The Westfield, Indiana, native has transformed from a three-star prospect into the most prolific playmaker in the history of the Big Ten. After leading the Boilermakers to the 2024 National Championship game and multiple conference titles, he enters the 2026 NCAA Tournament as a consensus All-American and the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year.

Smith is the first player in NCAA history to amass 1,500 points, 1,000 assists, and 500 rebounds in a career, a testament to his four-year durability and elite court vision. He recently cemented his legacy during the 2026 Big Ten Tournament, where he was named Most Outstanding Player after setting the all-time conference records for assists in a single game (16), a single tournament (46), and a career (96).

As Purdue begins its 2026 title run, Smith sits at 1,075 career assists, trailing Duke legend Bobby Hurley by just one for the all-time Division I record. A winner of the 2025 Bob Cousy Award as the nation’s top point guard, Smith has maintained a staggering 3:1 assist-to-turnover ratio while shooting over 40% from beyond the arc. Whether he breaks the record in the first half or the second, Smith has already secured his place as the gold standard for collegiate floor generals.
