Ex-Eagle Reed Blankenship Shocks Philadelphia Fans With Recent Comments

This offseason has been a wild ride for the Philadelphia Eagles to this point. They went in with the intention of returning to the heights they had come to find in previous seasons.

It's obviously unrealistic to assume a trip to the Super Bowl every season, but with where Philadelphia is as an organization right now, a first-round elimination to the 49ers doesn't cut it. 

So far in the free agency cycle, we're already looking at a much different Eagles team than we've seen in previous seasons. They've lost pieces like Jaelan Phillips, Nakobe Dean, Jahon Dotson, and one very noticeable piece on the back end. 

Safety Reed Blankenship decided to sign elsewhere as he agreed to a deal with the Houston Texans.  Today, he made his first major appearance on a podcast since departing Philadelphia, and what he said shocked some Eagles fans.

Reed Blankenship had a Zoom interview with Texans reporter Aaron Wilson today, and there was one comment he made about his recruiting process with Houston that didn't make much sense to Eagles fans. 

In the interview, when speaking on Houston's pursuit of him, Blankenship said, "That honestly felt like the first time in my whole career that somebody really wanted me as a player and as a person."

As someone who was undrafted in 2022 out of Middle Tennessee State, it makes all the sense in the world how a guy like that could have a chip on his shoulder based on not being wanted. What doesn't make sense is everything after that. 

Blankenship made his way to Philadelphia and over the years became a fan favorite not only among the fanbase but seemingly within the locker room, too. He won over both with his talent and relentless effort on the field. He was even voted as a team captain by his teammates prior to this last season. 

The only reason I could possibly think of that would lead him to feel like he wasn't wanted was how this free agency period played out. He signed with Houston on a 3-year deal worth just a little over $8M a year. That seems like something Philly could have matched or beaten with all the cap space they have. 

There may have been more than we know going on behind the scenes, but for now, it sounds like Houston is getting a highly motivated Blankenship this season.
