The trade isn’t yet official, but the Los Angeles Rams are moving closer to ensuring Trent McDuffie remains a part of the team for a long time. After agreeing to acquire the All-Pro cornerback from the Kansas City Chiefs last week, the Rams and McDuffie have had discussions about a new contract.

According to NFL Network, the Rams have made “significant progress” on a contract extension with McDuffie and “the hope is a deal is done in the near future.” Since the trade can’t become official until Wednesday when the new league year begins, the Chiefs had to give the Rams permission to talk to McDuffie about an extension.

On his new contract, McDuffie is expected to become the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL at more than $30 million per year. Currently, Sauce Gardner is the top-paid cornerback, earning $30.1 million annually from the Colts.

McDuffie is entering the final year of his rookie contract, which he signed after he was drafted in the first round in 2022. The 2026 season marks the fifth-year option on his rookie deal, which would pay him $13.6 million for one year.

The Rams are trading a first-, fifth- and sixth-round pick this year, as well as a third-rounder in 2027, to the Chiefs in exchange for McDuffie.
