Jarell Quansah angrily calls for better ‘team play’ in the midst of Bayer Leverkusen slump

England international Jarell Quansah was in no mood to celebrate yesterday despite scoring his third Bundesliga goal. The former Liverpool international’s 88th minute 1-1 helped Bayer Leverkusen nick a point off of Mainz Saturday afternoon. Quansah nevertheless felt that his team’s recent league form remained too disconcerting.

Bayer Leverkusen struggling in the league

Perhaps focused a tad too much on their ongoing Champions League campaign, Kasper Hjulmand’s Werkself haven’t been delivering regularly in the Bundesliga during the current 2026 calendar year. Just three wins for eight league fixtures leaves them in 6th place in the Bundesliga table. More alarmingly, results against lower table sides have been especially poor.

Leverkusen found themselves upset by Union Berlin last week and have now drawn relegation candidates Mainz and Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-1. Germany’s red company team – completely overhauled personnel-wise this past summer– famously dismissed head coach Erik ten Hag earlier this season as they thought the Dutchman wasn’t the right man to help the new crew gel.

Until recently, it appeared as if head coach Kasper Hjulmand was precisely the right man to get a squad with so many fresh faces to coalesce. Quansah’s comments, however, seem to suggest otherwise. The once-capped England international signs a surprisingly familiar tune, almost sounding a bit like his former short lived coach.

In my opinion, it’s not good enough,” Quansah told Leverkusen’s own club TV channel. “We didn’t win and that’s not good enough. We’ve been saying this a lot lately: Not enough energy, not enough intensity. I just wasn’t enough again today.

I feel like we’re playing against ourselves at the moment,” Quansah continued. “We don’t play together enough and we have different ideas. We’re playing in a disorganized manner and need to regroup.
