Lady Vols defeat Appalachian State to open Tennessee Invitational

No. 1 Tennessee (15-0) opened play in the Tennessee Invitational on Friday at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium. The Lady Vols defeated Appalachian State (12-3), 9-1, in six innings.

Erin Nuwer started for Tennessee and pitched six innings. She totaled five strikeouts and 88 pitches, including 52 strikes, against 23 batters.
Nuwer allowed four hits, one walk and one run (one earned) against the Mountaineers. Appalachian State hit eight groundouts and four flyouts against the Lady Vols’ right-handed pitcher.
Makayla McClain hit a solo home run against Nuwer in the first inning.
Tennessee scored its first runs of the contest in the fifth inning. Camryn Fisher walked Taelyn Holley and Ella Dodge with the bases loaded.
Elsa Morrison also hit a three-run double in the fifth inning. She went 3-for-4 and totaled two doubles and four RBIs, including a walkoff single for a run-rule decision.
Tennessee’s offense went 2–for-7 with two outs, 4-for-16 with runners on base and 3-for-11 with runners in scoring position. The Lady Vols totaled seven hits in the contest.
