A Toronto hospital has been named the world’s second-best medical facility in Newsweek magazine’s best hospitals list this year.

University Health Network’s Toronto General came in behind the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., on the U.S. magazine’s annual list — the highest position ever achieved by a Canadian hospital.

The UHN hospital has ranked among the list’s top 10 since it began in 2019, most recently holding third place for two consecutive years, according to a Canadian Press report.

The facility is known for cardiac care, organ transplants and complex patient needs.

“This global recognition affirms UHN’s legacy of discovery and our pursuit of excellence where care, research, and education move together in service of patients,” said Dr. Kevin Smith, president and CEO of UHN, in a news release.

“It belongs to TeamUHN: clinicians, researchers, educators, learners, and staff whose collective work is delivering exceptional care, advancing discovery, and preparing the next generation of health professionals.”

Newsweek partnered with global data platform Statista to rank hospitals based on recommendations from medical experts, hospital quality metrics, and existing patient experience data from more than 2,500 hospitals across 32 countries.

The news magazine’s rankings list 250 of the world’s top hospitals with the goal of helping patients find high-quality medical care.

Toronto General wasn’t the only GTA hospital that earned a spot on the magazine’s list. Other hospitals that cracked the top 100 spots were Mount Sinai Hospital, which ranked 27th, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, which ranked 30th, and North York General Hospital, which ranked 67th.

St. Michael’s Hospital took the 116th spot, while UHN’s Toronto Western Hospital came in at 128.
