US women’s hockey team won’t participate in Donald Trump’s State of the Union address
According to statements provided to NBC News, the U.S. women’s hockey team has declined the invite to attend Donald Trump’s State of the Union address in Washington, D.C. The invitation reportedly followed the team’s gold medal win at the 2026 Winter Games. They defeated Canada 2–1 in overtime last Thursday.
The invitation itself was referenced during a phone call between Trump and the U.S. men’s hockey team after their own 2–1 gold medal victory over Canada on Sunday. In a video shared online, Trump congratulated the men’s team. He then joked that the women would also need to be invited.
“I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team,” he said with a laugh. The president added that he believed he would “probably be impeached” if they weren’t included.
In response to the invite, a spokesperson for USA Hockey said in a statement that the women’s team was “sincerely grateful” for the invitation. They also noted that the team appreciated “the recognition of their extraordinary achievement.”
However, the spokesperson explained that prior “academic and professional commitments following the Games” would prevent the athletes from attending. The team, the statement added, was “honored to be included.”
On the ice, the women’s victory was sealed by captain Hilary Knight, who scored the game-winning goal in overtime. The 36-year-old secured her second Olympic gold and fifth medal overall.
Teammate Laila Edwards also made history as the first Black woman to represent Team USA in Olympic hockey. “I think representation is so important, and role models are important,” Edwards told PEOPLE.
The decision not to attend the Washington, D.C., event has generated discussion online. Nonetheless, officials have highlighted scheduling conflicts rather than controversy. Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether the men’s team plans to attend the address.
