No. 7 Florida State softball splits day two of Dugout Club Classic with Dartmouth and Alabama

Florida State softball took the diamond for day two of the Dugout Club Classic. On the first day, they run ruled Dartmouth with a 10-2 score, before dropping 8-0 to a ranked Alabama squad.

Today, the Seminoles got another run rule of Dartmouth before falling to Alabama for the second day in a row.

Game One FSU 8-0 Dartmouth

1st Inning

Marlee Gaskell led off with a single for the Big Green, but got her next batter to roll a double play ball. Gaskell was able to see the minimum before her offense went to the bats.

In the bottom of the inning, Marin Heller, batting lead off for the first time, had a triple. With a runner on third, Ashtyn Danley made it 1-0 on a ground out off of Isabel Kirby.

2nd Inning

The FSU offense opened up with back to back singles, and two more extra base hits from Makenna Sturgis and Bella Ruggiero brought both runners home.

Now 3-0, Dartmouth went to the bullpen for Charley Maddox, who threw a wild pitch to move Ruggiero over to third base. A ground out from Angelee Bueno extended the lead and turned over the lineup.

Heller got on base with a single, and went to third base on a double from Jaysoni Beachum. Another wild pitch from Maddox moved everyone up, and made it 5-0 for the ‘Noles.

3rd Inning

After a leadoff out, Gaskell had two runners in scoring position. FSU made a change from the freshmen, going with Bella Dimitrijevic. Dimitrijevic got a ground out before loading the bases with a walk. The defense got a fielder’s choice and keeping Dartmouth scoreless.

Anna Hinde singled in the bottom of the inning, and got all the way to third on a wild pitch and walk to Shelby McKenzie. A sacrifice fly from Sturgis brought home Hinde, making it 6-0.

5th Inning

After Dimitrijevic got out of a jam in the top of the inning, Hayley Griggs walked to lead off. Two runs away from another run rule of Dartmouth, McKenzie stepped up to the plate. McKenzie added yet another walk off homerun to her credit, as she sent a 2 run shot off of Maddox to center field.

Recap

1st Inning

Jazzy Francik made quick work of her first two batters, before Alabama got on the board via a solo homerun. An error did add another baserunner, but the defense kept the damage to just the lone run.

Offensively, the Seminoles faced Jocelyn Briski for the Crimson Tide. Briski shut down the FSU lineup, going 1-2-3 for Bama.

4th Inning

It was a similar story in the 4th, Francis got her first tow outs, before a solo homerun added a run for Alabama. The solo shot to left field from Mari Hubbard made it 2-0 for the Tide.

Beachum and Danley led off with back to back singles, trying to get runs on the board for FSU. However, Briski stranded the runners, adding two strikeouts to her line.

5th Inning

Francik had a one out walk to her credit in the 5th. With a runner on base, Alexis Pupillo had her second homerun of the day. The 2-run homerun made it 4-0 for Alabama before Francik gave up a single. The second hit of the inning pulled Francik from the game, and brought in Makenna Reid. Out of the bullpen, Reid got the last two outs, and stranding the runner at first.

Sturgis reached second in the bottom half of the inning, after a single and wild pitch. Sturgis was able to get to third base, but Briski and the Alabama defense kept her there, and kept their 4-0 lead.

6th Inning

Reid took the circle for another inning of work. Leading off, Jena Young sent a solo shot off of Reid, to extend her teams lead. The Tide applied more pressure after two singles had runners on the corners with two outs. FSU went back to the bullpen, this time for Danley. Facing the homerun hitter Pupillo, Danley got her to strike out looking to limit the Tide’s damage.

Down 5-0, and with Briski still in the circle for Alabama, she retired the ‘Noles in order.

7th Inning

After Danley kept Alabama off the board in the top of the inning, the offense had their last chance. For FSU, the only run produced was a Sturgis solo homerun. The Seminoles fell to Alabama 5-1.
