USI Baseball scores 18 runs in home opener win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — After opening the season (2-2) on the road, the University of Southern Indiana baseball team tallied 18 runs in their home opener win against Oakland University.

The bats started hot for the Screaming Eagles Thurday afternoon, they recorded eight runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 8-0 lead. However, their defensive woes were on display once again as they gave up five runs on four hits in the top of the second to have their lead cut down to three.

In the bottom of the third, USI rallied again scoring three runs to push the lead to 11-5. The Golden Grizzlies put up another three runs in the fifth inning on a Screaming Eagles’ error and a triple. But Southern Indiana responded with a four run seventh inning and three run eighth inning. USI gave up one more run in the top of the ninth to win 18-9.

Infielders Clayton Slack and Zion Stephens led the way for the Screaming Eagles with three hits each in four at bats. Patrick McLellan, Micajah Wall, and Jesse Velders all had two hits on the night. USI finished the game with 14 hits and 16 RBIs compared to Oakland’s 11 hits and six RBIs. Trey O’Neil got the win on the mound, pitching two innings, while facing eight batters, giving up three hits, and recording four strike-outs. Andres Gonzalez got the start against the Golden Grizzlies. He pitched two innings while giving up five runs on four hits, recorded five errors, three walks, and two strike-outs.

Southern Indiana and Oakland will face off in a double header Friday, February 20th, starting at 1 p.m. at USI Baseball Field.
