District 3 basketball tournament kicks off; 4 Berks teams play today

The District 3 tournament starts today with four Berks teams, including BCIAA girls champion Wilson, taking to the hardwood.
There will be three girls games today and one boys game – all 7 p.m. starts – in the opening round.
Wilson (23-2) hosts Penn Manor in a first round game in Class 6A.
The fourth-seeded Bulldogs won their first county title since 2014 on Friday night by beating Exeter, 54-44, at Santander Arena. The Bulldogs went 12-0 in the regular season in the BCIAA and then ran the table in the tourney, beating Kutztown, Reading High and the Eagles.
Wilson has not lost a game since Dec. 22 when the Bulldogs fell to Dallastown 49-38. Their only other loss was to District 12’s Cardinal O’Hara 61-49 on Dec. 11.
The Bulldogs feature a well-balance scoring offense, consisting of six players.
Laila Jones and Kailani Hardy are each averaging 11.9 points per game. The other four key contributors for the Bulldogs are Laura Crocona (8.2), Jade Lee (7.1), Ryan Leaman (6.9) and Violet Houck (6.9).
Penn Manor is the 13th seed and is 14-8. The Comets’ leading scorer is Alayzha Twyman who is averaging 10.9 ppg.
The other Berks girls team in the 6A tourney is Gov. Mifflin, seeded 11th. The Mustangs (17-6) are at sixth-seeded Ephrata (18-5) today.
The Mountaineers are led by Leah Caldwell, who is averaging 11.7 ppg.
Bella Super is Gov. Mifflin’s top scorer, averaging 19.4 ppg.
In 3A, it’s a Berks matchup in the quarterfinals with fourth-seeded Oley Valley (14-9) hosting fifth-seeded Kutztown (14-9). The winner plays top-seeded Trinity in the semifinals.
Kadyn Rhoads leads the Lynx with a 10.0 ppg average, and Kaitlyn Houptley leads the Cougars with a 10.9 ppg average.
Exeter is the only Berks boys team playing today, with the 11th-seeded Eagles (16-9) traveling to sixth-seeded York Suburban (17-5).
The Eagles lost to eventual champion Berks Catholic, 57-40, in the BCIAA semifinals after beating Wilson in the quarterfinals.
Exeter’s leading scorer is Aidan Dauble at 15.1 ppg, followed by Jayden Ware (11.7).
